Poets or Pirate?

Personal Add comments

During my recent week long sabbatical aka, bronchitis, I did a lot of stuff I haven't done in awhile. Like sleep for 16 or more hours in a day. Go through an entire box of tissues. Eat a half gallon of chocolate ice cream because it's felt good. Drink a half gallon of Mango Orange Juice. Watch TV for hours and realize you have no idea what you saw.

I also watched a few movies. Something I haven't done in a long time sadly. I rented 2 good movies, 1 great movie and 1 WOW movie. The good ones where National Treasure Book of Secrets and The Bourne Ultimatum. The great movie was I Am Legend, and my WOW movie? August Rush.

I don't see why so many people disliked I Am Legend. I thought it was a great story and I'm very happy with the way it all played out. I'm not even going to talk about the good ones, cause they were just "good". But I would like to talk about August Rush.

The story is simple. Guy meets girl. Guy and girl fall in love, have one night together which leads to the girl getting pregnant. Nothing earth shattering here and so far just like a lot of other coming of age films etc. Well the kid is put up for adoption and then we fast forward 11 years.

This kid Evan, who later is renamed August, is a musical prodigy. He hears music everywhere. In the cars, the wind, the birds, the falling rain, everywhere. The cool part is that the film makers actually make it so you can hear this symphony of music in his head. So as he puts the sounds together you hear the beauty of the song. If you love music you will just love this movie, trust me.

I love music but have no musical talent at all. I can barely sing, and my guitar I think hates me, or at least wishes death upon my fingers. But while watching this movie I couldn't help but get inspired. I wanted to pick up my guitar and just jam out like this kid. I wanted to have his inspiration. His ability to hear the music in everything around us.

Now I know I'll never have this kids skills and I might never get past my little Spy Hunter theme song guitar skills. But this movie did remind me of a skill I used to have a long time ago. Something I haven't done in a long time. Something not many guys admit to being able to do.

I used to be quiet the poet.

Ok for those of you laughing you can stop reading right now, cause I'd hate for you to hurt yourself any further. For those of you intrigued you may read on with my blessings.

Yes I was a poet. In high school I actually helped put together a poet / short story / artist magazine during my senior year. I had quiet a few poems published actually. I even had my own self published book which I passed out to my friends. Many of them would ask me to help them create something to swoon a girl of interests, or to help smooth over a recent bumpy event. I was somewhat of a little hopeless romantic of my crew and yes I even had a website about this at one point.

Watching this movie me made me realize how this was yet another thing from my past, something which I loved but had given up. I don't know why I gave it up. I'm sure as I moved away form high school, or grew up, the ridicule from those less talented caused me to stop writing. It's funny how we let people, whom we probably shouldn't care about, control our destinies.

So I'm going to try to get back into it. It's been an awful long time, so I'm expecting my first compositions will be just as awful but I'm going to try. Don't expect me to publish anything here just yet. I mean we barely know each other, and so far this blog has been really lopsided in conversation.

But soon. Maybe I'll share, if nothing else we can all get a good laugh out of it right!

Oh yea go watch August Rush you'll love it.
